CAUSES    :

  • Participants weren't adequately informed of the reason for the meeting and didn't prepare.

  • The presence of a boss or authority figure is inhibiting participants.

  • The leader has not maintained an open and receptive posture.

PROBLEM : Participants argue with each other in small groups.

CAUSES    :

  • Leader arrived late allowing factions to take sides.

  • Leader did not emphasize points of agreement.

  • Leader did not assert control over dominating participant.

 

PROBLEM : Discussion wanders from topic.

CAUSES    :

  • Leader didn't place enough emphasis on purpose.

  • Leader didn't adequately redirect off-the-topic comments.

 

PROBLEM : Participants talk in platitudes and avoid expressing their true opinions.

CAUSES    :

  •  The presence of a boss or authority figure is inhibiting participants.

  • The leader has not maintained an open and receptive posture.

  • Unspoken concerns are inhibiting participants - participants feel threatened.

 

PROBLEM : Meeting continually stalls for lack of information or authority.

CAUSES     :

  • Wrong people in attendance.

  • Poor preparation by leader.

  • Another approach was needed to solve the problem.  The meeting should not have been held at all.    

 

PROBLEM : Participants unable to focus on topic.

CAUSES      :

  • The issue is sufficiently simple that it could have been resolved without a meeting.

  • Another more urgent and compelling problem has arisen. (Dedicating a few minutes to the new problem may get your meeting back on track.)

 

PROBLEM : One participant dominates.

CAUSES    :

  • Leader has failed to maintain control.

  • Participant may feel that his or her ideas are not being given equal consideration.

  • Participant may feel threatened by the outcome of the meeting.

  • Participant may not realize that he or she is talking too much.  ( Try tactful reminders. )
